O’Donnellan & Joyce has announced it will provide a free valuation service of any house throughout Galway city during the month of January.

A decision on the Local Property Tax rate for the county has been deferred until next Monday due to concerns about a shortfall in Galway County Council’s budget. At this week’s local authority meeting it was agreed that a special meeting will be held next week to discuss the matter.

The public must make their voices heard on the local property tax rate which is up for review next month, and tell City Hall that any increase in the current rate will not be tolerated.

The Galway city and county councils will be €1,116,323 out of pocket due to a national agreement on rates recalculation which sees rates payments made nationally, and not to the local authorities.

The Revenue department has announced that it is willing to make arrangements with both qualifying home and business owners in relation to certain taxes that are due shortly to them.

It has been labelled the worst news that Galway County Councill has received in a long time. Local representatives have expressed their disgust following an announcement by Council CEO Kevin Kelly that there will be a €750,000 reduction in the council’s rates income for 2016, which will adversely affect the local authority’s upcoming budget. The reduction is due to The Valuation Office reducing the value of a number of properties in the county used by utility companies, therefore reducing the rates bill of these companies. 

The pay and file season for Local Property Tax (LPT) 2016 will be starting soon, and Revenue is writing to approximately 755,000 residential property owners to give them the opportunity to decide how and when they want to pay.

There will be no reduction to the Local Property Tax rate in Galway city or county next year. At the September monthly meeting of Galway County Council, local representatives voted to keep the property tax rate unchanged while city councillors passed a similar motion at their meeting a fortnight ago.

Galway city councillors have voted to retain the local property tax at its current rate for the coming year.

The Finance Act 2012 permits a local authority to vary the basic rate of the local property tax for its administrative area by a percentage known as the local adjustment factor. The elected members of the Galway City Council will meet in September 2015 to consider the matter.
